Wrapping up 2020

2020 was a difficult year. At Mosa Meat, the pandemic meant we needed to get creative, set up working from home, and introduce new measures in our labs.

But through it all, we managed to reach major milestones - such as raising $75 million, and growing to a team of 62.

Read on for more Mosa Meat 2020 milestones.

We raised $75 million in our Series B funding round

In our first closing of Series B fundraising we welcomed Blue Horizon Ventures as new partners. Bell Food Group and M Ventures, existing partners, also participated.

In the second closing, we welcomed Mitsubishi Corporation, Target Global, ArcTern Ventures, and Rubio Impact Ventures.

This is the biggest funding round ever for cultured meat in Europe. It will be used to extend our current pilot production facility, develop an industrial-sized production line, expand our growing team, and introduce delicious cultivated beef to consumers.

The funding will help make cultivated meat a reality.

We reduced our medium cost by 88 times

In July we announced that our dedicated Medium Optimisation team reduced the cost of our cell culture media (the nutrition that feeds the cells so they can proliferate) by 88 times.

This, alongside removing Fetal Bovine Serum in 2019, was no small task.

The team are now working on ensuring our growth media are completely animal component-free.

We grew to a team of 62 Mosæans

We started 2020 with 30 Mosæans, and we’re wrapping up the year with over 60.

This amazing team of dedicated scientists, engineers, and food-lovers, is what makes it all possible and we are excited to be growing so rapidly.

We’re not stopping there and will continue to grow in 2021. Have a look at our most recent openings.

We moved to our new home

In July, our Stemness and Isolation and Media teams conducted some of the first experiments in our brand new labs in Maastricht.

This pilot facility, which is known as Watermelon among our team, is where we will scale up our first products for market in a few years.

That’s not all. We also welcomed mission-led Nutreco and LowerCarbon Capital as partners, and Dr. Regina Hecker to our board, we joined the RisingFoodStars Network in Europe, and had a further investment by early partners Bell Food Group.

From everyone at Mosa Meat, we want to thank you for working together, and for joining us on our journey, and we wish you a safe and happy holiday period. Bring on 2021!
