Mosa Meat Joins Landmark FSA “Sandbox” for Cultivated Meat in the UK

We’re thrilled to announce that Mosa Meat has been selected by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) to participate in its pioneering two-year Regulatory Sandbox. It’s an intensive collaboration designed to facilitate open dialogue and co-learning about cultivated meat. This initiative aims to streamline the regulatory process for novel cell-cultivated products (CCPs), ultimately benefiting both the industry and consumers.

A Unique Opportunity for Collaboration
This Sandbox provides a forum for Mosa Meat and other forward-thinking companies to work closely with the FSA. Together, we’ll delve into safety assessments, share scientific insights, and refine regulatory pathways to ensure these products meet the highest possible standards. Our own co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer, Dr. Mark Post, is joining the first kick-off session in London today to help launch this exciting initiative.

“We are honoured to be one of the few included in this government-funded collaborative programme, and excited to contribute the knowledge of our 70+ scientists toward a co-learning process that benefits the Food Standards Agency and other cultivated meat and seafood companies.

These are exactly the kind of public-private partnerships we envisioned when we debuted the world’s first cultivated burger right here in London in 2013.”

The FSA’s Sandbox enables a more robust pre-submission engagement process, allowing us to incorporate best practices and insights directly into our upcoming market authorisation request in the UK.

Currently, Mosa Meat has market authorisation requests under review in the EU and Switzerland, but we have not yet had access to a presubmission programme comparable to those offered in Singapore or the U.S. By participating in the Sandbox, we aim to accelerate our regulatory timeline for the UK market, reducing potential delays and strengthening our submission.

This announcement comes on the heels of significant achievements for our team. In February, we exceeded our crowdfunding target in just 24 minutes, ultimately raising £3.2 million (€3.8 million). We’ve also recently submitted a request for authorisation to sell our cultivated beef in the European Union and Switzerland, underlining our commitment to rigorous, science-based safety standards.

We’re proud to be at the forefront of innovation in cultivated meat and are excited to embark on this journey with the FSA. Stay tuned for more updates as we progress through the Sandbox.
